FixBoot is a temporary initialization file (TIF) that makes sure that when your Apple IIgs boots, all your ProDOS-formatted RAM disks have valid boot blocks. It does this by copying the boot block from your startup disk to each empty ProDOS-formatted RAM disk it finds on your computer.
Why is this helpful? Normally, ProDOS RAM disks don't have a boot block on them. FixBoot corrects this, so that you can copy a system disk onto your RAM disk and boot from it without having to remember to format the RAM disk first.
It all happens behind the scenes, without your needing to pay any attention at all, once it's installed. If you ever need to boot a RAM disk, FixBoot is essential!
